How Often Should I Get a Massage?

Man receiving neck massageMany patients wonder how frequently they should get a massage. As everyone is different there’s no clear-cut frequency recommendation. It all depends on each client’s individual needs and goals. For example, if you’re just seeking relaxation and don’t have any pain, injury or soreness g to address, then once a month is sufficient.

However, if you have long-standing pain, for example, or have an injury for which you’re seeking relief, the frequency would increase. It may be anywhere from once a week for a short period of time before reducing the frequency to every two or three weeks once the muscles and tissues are responding well. After a program of corrective massage care the average recommendation as part of a wellness program would be every 4 weeks.

The Value of Maintenance Massage

Just as you maintain your vehicle by getting it serviced at recommended intervals you can consider regular massage as a tune-up for the body and mind. You can feel better physically and mentally by getting a massage on a regular basis.

For general maintenance, we recommend that patients come in once or twice a month. This type of massage has many benefits when incorporated into a program. These are just a few of them:

  • Reduces pain and inflammation
  • Increases circulation
  • Reduces stress
  • Increases relaxation
  • Improves range of motion
  • Boosts mood
  • Improves sleep

We find that the majority of our patients transition to the maintenance phase after they move past the acute initial phase, as they experience the benefits of regular massage.

Why Mental Well-Being Is More Important Than Ever

As we’re all trying to navigate through life’s stressors, self-care is vital. Massage is one of the best ways to deal with the stress that is heightened for many people these days. From balancing career demands to overseeing your child’s online schooling, you may welcome the relaxation and therapeutic benefits of massage.
