Chiropractic Care

Our patients often come to Central Avenue Health Centre with problems such as migraines, headaches, neck pain, shoulder stiffness, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica, rib pain, hip pain and more. They’re seeking solutions that don’t involve taking medications to mask their discomfort but discovering the root cause of the issue instead. Our natural care is noninvasive and designed to enhance your self-healing abilities.

How Chiropractic Helps You

When your spine is out of alignment, it puts pressure on and irritates the nerves around the spine. Misalignment of the spine are called subluxations. When a subluxation occurs, if left untreated, causes spinal degeneration. In addition to spinal degeneration, which can also be referred to as osteoarthritis, subluxations result in the unhealthy function of other areas in the body, depending on the location of the subluxation. For example, subluxations in the low back can also affect bladder function, bowel movements and fertility as the nerves leaving the lower spine are controlling these parts of the body. This is one example why proper chiropractic care has more benefits than just removing pain and restoring movement.

Our Saskatoon based office detects and corrects subluxations to reverse or reduce this process.

Our Careful Examination Process

To uncover how we can help you, we begin with a detailed analysis of your spine and body. We seek to address the root cause of your problems, not just resolve your symptoms. During your first visit, the chiropractor will take a thorough history and do a physical examination including range of motion tests, reflex checks and orthopedic tests. A surface electromyography test, also known as a Backscan, is often completed to check nerve function. If any of these tests indicate further testing is necessary, an X-ray may be requested.

An adjustment is performed based on your individual needs. Our chiropractic adjustments are highly skilled, using precise movements to restore alignment and proper movement. Various positions are used to perform the adjustments so wearing loose, comfortable clothing that isn’t restrictive is beneficial.

The techniques we use include Diversified, Gonstead, Thompson Drop, Flexion-Distraction and the Integrator instrument.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do adjustments hurt?

We're happy to report that most of our patients find adjustments comfortable and relieving. Adjustments aim to restore balance to your spine and nervous system, allowing for better communication between the brain and body. When proper communication is restored, the body can function optimally! Occasionally a patient will feel some discomfort during a treatment but often that is no more than they are already experiencing due to their condition.

Will I start feeling better immediately?

Many patients will experience some relief within the first 24 hours, however one fifth of patients will still feel discomfort. The discomfort can be similar to what a person might feel after doing a hard workout. It is a healing pain, not a harming pain. It is also important to remember that in most cases, several factors contributed to the injury and therefore will take some time to heal.

For those that are experiencing extreme pain prior to their adjustment, the chiropractor will modify the adjustment in order to keep the patient as comfortable as possible while still providing an effective treatment. Our chiropractic team will also recommend other methods to relieve some of the pain prior to your next treatment. Initially, we will be working to reduce inflammation, increase movement and remove pain, therefore appropriate, light stretching, ice or heat packs, and homeopathic ointments such as Traumacare or Biofreeze can be helpful.

Will my back 'pop' during an adjustment?

It's possible-and entirely normal. The 'popping' sound you may hear is not your bones cracking-it's actually just gas escaping from the joints. This occurs when a joint is moved quickly through it's full range of motion causing a gas exchange in the joint.

Do I have to continue care forever?

Choosing to continue chiropractic care with us after you've achieved your initial treatment goals, is entirely up to you. Most patients continue to visit us monthly or even weekly, depending on their unique needs. This is because once they're out of pain, they feel incredible, and want to keep feeling that way! Regular chiropractic care may help lessen your chance of reinjury. but more importantly, it can detect and prevent early spinal decay. For those who have already have osteoarthritis, chiropractic care can improve function and prevent further decay to maintain movement and longevity.

Do you take x-rays?

Yes, we refer many patients to an x-ray lab so we can see exactly what is going on in the body. We will review them before your next appointment and show you exactly what's going on inside of your body; making you an active partner in your natural wellness care. We will provide you with a copy of your x-rays so you can share them with your other health providers or show them to your family so they can also understand your chiropractic needs.

How frequently will I have to come?

Appointment frequency varies depending on the patient's condition and treatment goals. Some patients see us several times a week while others see us monthly. Our chiropractors will always discuss their recommended treatment plan with the patient and never treat someone more frequently than necessary or desired.

When is the best time to see a chiropractor?

A chiropractor can see a patient immediately following an injury. Delaying care to see if an injury will heal on its own can actually cause more damage long term as scar tissue will begin to form. The general rule of thumb is the closer to the injury time the better!

Anyone who has been in a car accident and suffered even a mild whiplash injury should see care from an experienced chiropractor. Our Saskatoon office is set up for providing SGI approved chiropractic care.

Workplace injuries should also be reported to a chiropractic office quickly to ensure proper recovery and to achieve a timely return to work. Although some workplaces encourage their workers to use their health benefits, we always advise patients to go through the appropriate channel which is Workers' Compensation Board (WCB). Our Chiropractic team can help you with the paperwork and advise you how to move forward with your claim.
