Neck Pain

Without a doubt, neck pain is one of the most common complaints we see at our practice. Considering the time people spend at their workstations or on their digital devices at home, it’s no surprise that many suffer from neck discomfort.

It’s rare for neck pain to be a symptom of a more serious problem. If, however, your discomfort is accompanied by numbness or loss of strength in your arms or hands, or if you have shooting pain into your shoulder or down your arm, seek medical care immediately.

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of neck pain include muscle tightness and spasms, a decreased ability to move your head, and headache.

Common causes

Because your neck is flexible and supports the weight of your head, it can be prone to injuries and conditions that result in pain and restricted motion. Here are some of the most common causes of neck discomfort:

  • Muscle strains
  • Worn joints
  • Nerve compression
  • Injuries

Frequently Asked Questions

What types of techniques do you find successful in addressing neck pain?

Manipulations and mobilization, range of motion and resistance exercises, stretching, hot/cold therapy, massage, and acupuncture are all helpful. We also evaluate a patient’s work and sleep posture, assess their pillows and bed, and check their footwear.

How long until patients typically notice relief?

Patients can notice relief after the first visit. However, that initial relief after just one visit is not permanent, and it takes longer for those more concrete changes to occur. In this sense, patients can typically notice improvement in just a few weeks.

Do you take any special precautions when adjusting the neck?

Yes, we do orthopedic and neurological testing to identify potential red flags. We also take a full medical history, including a medication list, and take X-rays, before making adjustments.

How do you calm a nervous patient?

Being calm and understanding is the first step in calming a nervous patient. Explaining everything thoroughly before, during, and after the adjustment is absolutely necessary. If the patient is still nervous, offering other techniques such as mobilization, stretching, etc. can help alleviate any nervousness.
