Cupping Therapy Saskatoon

cupping therapy on womans backCupping therapy can be used for many reasons. These reasons can include, tight muscles or lingering tension, aid in helping to break down scar tissue from an old injury or the prevention of injuries, as well as maintaining muscle health. Cupping therapy can be a great addition to your massage care.

Gentle Suction That Reaches Deeper Than Touch Alone

Cupping uses plastic or silicone cups placed on the skin. Instead of applying pressure, the cups create a gentle suction to lift and separate the tissue beneath the skin. This creates a different sensation from hands-on massage and may help ease tightness and improve mobility of the muscles, tendons and fascia. Cupping therapy is great for people who would like to get the deeper muscles worked but cannot take the pressure of a deep tissue massage, but they can also be used superficially.

A Complement to Massage Care

Cupping is often incorporated into massage sessions to help address muscle tightness, improve mobility, and aid in breaking down the build up of scar tissue. Some people also choose cupping as part of their care for concerns such as:

  • muscle tension and restricted range of motion
  • areas affected by scar tissue
  • abdominal discomfort or indigestion
  • tension headaches
  • general stress
Cupping is not appropriate for everyone. Before beginning, your therapist will review your health history and check for factors such as open wounds, skin irritation, recent injuries or inflammation, fever, certain medical conditions, blood-thinning medications or pregnancy. They will also consider the area being treated, to determine whether cupping is a suitable option for you.

A Comfortable, Guided Experience

Depending on the type of cupping your therapist provides, they will determine cup placement on your individual needs and comfort level. The therapist will check in with you through the treatment to make sure the cups are comfortable for you. Cupping is often integrated into a regular massage appointment, focusing on the areas where you feel the most tension. After the treatment you may notice circular markings from the cups, this is very normal due to the suction of the cups. These marks should fade within a few days of the treatment. Some methods of cupping can leave significantly more visible marks, however creating these marks is not the goal of the treatment.
